Lime and mineral mortars matter. Modern Portland cement is often incompatible with older masonry — we choose mortar mixes that move with the building.

Common questions
Do you only work on heritage-listed buildings?
No. While we specialise in heritage and character buildings, we also work on older homes, existing masonry buildings, façades, stonework, brickwork, and buildings affected by moisture, salt damage, or deterioration.
Can you inspect rising damp or salt damage?
Yes. We can inspect visible symptoms such as damp walls, salt deposits, fretting brickwork, deteriorating mortar, damaged render, and stone decay. Where required, we can recommend suitable repair methods such as desalination poultices, lime-based repairs, breathable mortars, or damp-related treatment options.
What causes salt damage in brick or stone walls?
Salt damage is commonly caused by moisture moving through masonry and carrying soluble salts to the surface. As the wall dries, the salts crystallise and can cause flaking, powdering, fretting, or surface loss in brick, stone, render, and mortar.
Can you match existing mortar, render, or stone repairs?
Where possible, we aim to match the appearance, texture, colour, and performance of the existing material. For heritage work, the goal is usually to repair sympathetically rather than make the building look artificially new.
Do you provide quotes from photos?
Photos are useful for an initial discussion, but many masonry and damp-related issues need to be assessed on site before a reliable scope or quote can be provided.
What makes heritage restoration different from normal renovation?
Heritage restoration focuses on preserving a building’s original materials, details and character while addressing deterioration. General renovation may involve broader changes or upgrades. We assess the existing building and choose compatible repair materials and methods suited to its age, condition and heritage significance.
